How Kyber helped a mission-driven lender eliminate IT roadblocks, strengthen security, and support sustainable growth

A business owner may have a low credit score, limited collateral, or may have previously been turned down for a loan by a bank—but this organization takes a holistic view of the applicant’s character and overall situation. While past hardships can complicate financial standing, those with the drive, passion, and commitment to succeed in business will be heard.
This team specializes in lending to early-stage businesses that are not yet bankable, as well as existing businesses that are unable to secure traditional bank financing.
When we started working with them, they were coming from an IT vendor who did not engage with their leadership to help them plan to leverage technology for the good of their organization. The were plagued with malware on their computers which slowed their team down and left them susceptible to breaches of their company and client data.
There was not a solid backup system in place leaving them in fear of any issues with their servers, which were also aging and ripe for failure.
Their employees could not securely and consistently work remotely as there was not a secure VPN solution in place. This caused anyone who was not able to come to work to have to take the day off as opposed to being productive from another location.
All IT related issues were being funneled through one employee which was significantly slowing down progress on their other critical duties for the organization. It is estimated that this was taking 10-20% of their time preventing them from being fully focused on the balance of her role.
While this was not expected by anyone, if they continued in this mode they would have been devastated in 2020 when the pandemic hit which could have caused them to have to change how they do business.
We started by doing a thorough documentation set and assessment of their network and organization. We identified the largest risks to their organization and planned out what needed to be done and by when.
We immediately put a solid backup program in place to ensure the safety of their data and deployed a defense in depth security program to stop malware and detect new threats. This included endpoint tools, network level tools and edge detection as well as monitoring of their email in M365 for potential nefarious behavior.
We then deployed employee awareness training and testing for their team to help them better understand the threats that existed and how to detect them before acting on a malicious email or link.
From there, we performed a full security assessment for them helping them understand the other risks to their organization and what should be done to reduce that risk. This was coupled with our strategic planning process with one of our virtual CIOs who worked with the leadership to understand how technology could
help them and put together a plan for the future.
